The Issue
The COVID-19 pandemic
has affected more than 1.6 billion children and youth in 161 countries due to
school closures. This is close to 80% of the world’s enrolled students.
Starting the school year late or interrupting it completely, disrupts the lives
of many children, their parents, and teachers.
In more detail...
Going to school is important not only for learning, but about building social relationships, collaborating and interacting with other students, as well. It is about learning how develop social skills. School students need opportunities to develop social-emotional
learning (SEL) skills that not only improve academic performance, but also
increase empathy, reduce depression and stress during these tough times of
social isolation and are highly effective in addressing initiatives like
anti-bullying, diversity and inclusion, and special education.
Maintaining the engagement of children is critical.
However, schools often
struggle to find ways to integrate SEL skills enhancement into their e-learning
curricula. The common practice in
most countries is to use all possible delivery modes with the infrastructure
that exists today, such as learning management tools, video calls, forums etc., to ensure that learning materials, videos, tutorials, and other resources are
available to students. However, TV, games, mobile phones and social networks
could provide a new effective approach to remote learning in terms of
maintaining the social relationships and peer-to-peer interactions.
SEL Skills
SEL emphasizes mastery of 5 core skills that prepare students for social success, as well as boost academic achievement. These are:
- Self-awareness
- Self-management
- Social awareness
- Relationship skills
- Responsible decision-making
Our Solution
Engagement with media,
especially those ensuring distance learning during the crisis like video games,
mobile learning and other means, will provide educators and anyone who works
with children with the opportunity to sustain learning with a focus on SEL skills,
by encouraging mutual support and fostering collaboration. Playing is learning and
helps children develop creativity, problem-solving and decision-making competences. It
also reduces anxiety and develops emotional resilience.
A unique approach
- The development of a research-evidence based handbook with guidelines to implement and support Socio-Emotional Learning with Minecraft, that will be used from educators as an instructional guide on how to exploit and deliver SEL cross-curricular activities in Minecraft Education Edition.
- The development of a complete educational gameplay in Minecraft, including all the required resources (challenges, lesson plans, resource packs, mods) that will facilitate educators to develop SEL game-based activities.
